Metamorphosis is a work centered on the concept of change — transformation both musically and personally. Throughout the piece, the music evolves from simple to complex and back again, reflected in various music elements.
On a personal level, Metamorphosis demonstrates a journey in my own growth as a composer. With this piece, I pushed myself to move further away from what I would have considered my "musical habits" and tried very hard not to fall back on patterns that I found in my previous works. I hope that this growth and transformation comes through in the music, and demonstrates my desire to continue pushing my own boundaries.
The piece was also commissioned and premiered by East London Community Band, which was instrumental in my growth as a conductor. My involvement with this band, and particularly the support and encouragement from its longtime director Matthew Hardy, allowed me to go from an aspiring conductor to one that understood the demands of the role much more intimately. Relocating to London and being welcomed into this musical family opened up invaluable opportunities for collaboration and growth — not only as a composer but as a musician. For this, I am profoundly grateful.
One final note for attentive listeners: the last note of Metamorphosis is orchestrationally "inspired" (read: ripped off) from the final note of the Chaconne from Holst’s First Suite — with which this piece was programmed during its premiere — which brings this musical journey full circle.
